UPDATE 01-15-07 - Well, it only took 26 applications to find Dodgie his new Mommy but he is going home in Friday!
His new Mom is a police officer so I hope she can teach him some manners but we know that no one will have to teach him to love and to make her laugh and love love love him. He is our very special boy and he has been a part of my life for over a year now. It took a long time to find his special person. We are so happy for our dear boy, sad for me but happy for him!
UPDATE on Dodgie --- Dodgie had a week long play date with one of our volunteers. She has to return him due to other family obligations. This is what she has to say about our dear boy Dodger:
Hi Marleen,
Here is little bit about my week with Dodgie:
Dodger is truly one of the best dogs I have ever met! He is such a energetic, joyful, loving boy. I just love having him around and if my circumstances were
different I would adopt him myself in a heartbeat.
Dodger loves to go for walks. His head is up high and there is a spring in his step; he loves to be out there checking everything out. He is a good walker and keeps a nice even pace on the leash EXCEPT when he sees a squirrel or other small animal, then he is off. That is that "hunter" you told me about. I have tried the Gentle Leader leash on him a few times. He doesn't really like it but it does keep him from pulling too hard on the
leash when he sees a small critter.
Dodgie likes other dogs as well and gets very excited when he sees them out on his walks. He'll pull on his leash and whimper a little like he is saying "please let me go play with them!" We met up with a Yorkie puppy on our walk yesterday and Dodger was very gentle with him, just sniffed him a little and let the puppy roll around and bump into him.
Dodgie is a playful boy who loves toys and chewies as well. He likes to play tug-o-war with his rope toy and will fetch it and bring it back if you throw it for him. He is so happy to have rawhides and treats - he flips them in the air and jumps around them before he goes to work on them. He even enjoys playing with the occasional odd item. The other day when I came home, I had an empty water bottle. Dodgie already had a braided rawhide in his mouth but he was determined to get the water bottle in there too and he did! He cruised around my place with the rawhide and
waterbottle stuffed in his mouth - it was hilarious!
As playful and energetic as Dodgie is, he is also a great big loving, snuggly boy. He is always so happy to see you; his tail wags like crazy and his little
body wiggles. He even does this when I am at home and just talking to him, not only when I first get home. It's like he knows you are giving him your attention and he is just so happy and grateful. Just about every time I sit down on the couch he will jump up and
sit down next to me and put his little head in my lap.
I do allow him to sleep on my bed - he jumps up and snuggles right down next to me (he is crate trained though and will go obediently to his crate like a good boy if you don't want him sleeping on the bed) There doesn't seem to be any privilege to Dodgie greater than to be cuddled up next to you. Dodger will probably make a great watchdog too because he always hears when there is someone in the hall or at my door -he becomes very alert and will bark a little bit. Nobody's getting in with Dodger on patrol!
I could go on and on about what a great boy Dodger is. I envy whoever is lucky enough to adopt him - he will
make them the most loving, loyal, funny, enjoyable companion anyone could ask for. Becky
Dodger is a Boxer/Bassett Hound mix. He looks like someone stuck a Boxer head on the body of a Bassett -- well, actually, guess that is what happened!
This is our most loving, sweet, happy, pure joyful dog in our rescue.
Please don't tell the others I a said that!
Our 2 year old Dodger needs your help. He has been in foster care for almost a year. He has had (24) applications but we have not been able to place him because he needs a fence at least 5 foot or electric fence. He can and does jump over 4 foot fences. MOST dogs can if they have a mind to.
He is also a hunter (Bassett Hound) and really has a strong need to rid the planet of CATS or small creatures!! Some people have not liked that about him. Geez, he is DOG! We are trying to find a family to adopt him who agrees with Dodger that CATS should not be anywhere near their home -- much less in them.
The problem is, Dodger has a very sensitive soul and since his Foster Mom has too many dogs --- she is not able to give him the attention or training he requires. He needs a new foster home or new home where he can be an "only child" so he doesn't have to share his toys, or bones or anything affection with his new people. He has TONS of love and affection to give. He gets along with other dogs very well, but he tries to vie for attention when he is among too many -- as he is here.
We do not want to place him with kids under 12 because he is so very strong that he could knock down any others. Again, he is good with older kids, but
he has the strength of a tank!
He needs to be someone's baby. He LOVES LOVES LOVES men (and all people) and is a great travel companion. He LOVES to sit up in the front seat and look out the window. You can actually see Dodgie smile!!
He is very, very strong, and would need someone who can walk him DAILY and who is VERY experienced at dog training. He is also very strong willed.
A more loving creature, a more joyful creature, would be hard to find --- but this dear boy needs more then we can provide to him at this time.
Please help if you can by offering to foster him (application is required) or adopting him. To help him get placed --- we have waived our "standard" adoption donation to help him get home. As always, the rescue would require a donation -- so that we may continue our important work.
UPDATE: Do you HATE CATS? Do you wonder what people see in them? Then if so, we have the boy for you! Dodger doesn't understand the point of cats either. He is our most loving boy to humans and dogs, but he feels that cats need to be removed from the premises.
We are going to ask a favor for Dodger. He just LOVES to climb up on the sofa and snuggle while we are watching TV. He is so very loving. We are going to ask that he does get adopted into a family who permits their dogs on the sofa. It would make him very, very happy to have that concession. He is low shedding so it won't be a huge favor!
UPDATE from Dodger's foster Mom:
Dodger is doing well! I have trained him to go to his kennel without fuss, and this part is cute! Since its been raining, his feet get really muddy and
wet, so I've trained him to run into his kennel and dry his feet first! I say "dry your feet" and he will run
and stamp around --- and shake dry -- then run out -- Isn't that cute?
UPDATE: Just wanted to give you an update on Dodger! Where do I begin? He is doing wonderful!
Facts about Dodg:
1) Dodger cuddles with Kyle, and follows me wherever I go and will cry if I leave the room and he can't follow. He is my little shadow. He wants to be everywhere I am, and will sit at my feet on a chair or couch, depending on room I'm in. He doesn't do this with Kyle. Funny huh? Who do you think he loves more?
2) He loves loves loves squeak toys!
3) Dodger will sit for a treat.
4) He has had no accidents.
5) He is protective of the home and barks when strange people walk by outside, but once outside he loves
everyone and he does great on a leash now.
That's about it. He listens very well. He knows what we want and we give him lots of love. He is going to be an excellent pet for his forever family!
UPDATE from Dodger's new foster family:
I hope your weren't too sad after you left. Dodger missed you when you left, but we distracted him with a long walk and some new bones.
He didn't eat very much last night but he woke up this morning a very hungry man. He has been up with us since about 6 and learning the morning routine.
He loves playing in the backyard and he has been very happy and bouncy.
He slept down stairs with us in his crate and was a great boy all night long. Before that he curled up on
the couch and watched some TV with us.
He is such a good boy! His walk last night was fun too. We are leash training him and he's doing well. He even met a few friends in the neighborhood. He hasnt done anything naughty! - Laurie & Kyle
We have had (24) applications on Dodger and two things keep happening, (1) people come to meet him and say "Oh, he's bigger then we thought!" His primary breed is Basset (average 50 pounds!) and they are large, LONG dogs. If you are familiar with the breed you know that.
He is up to 50 pounds now and keeps getting LONGER and LONGER. He is very short like Basset's but long, strong and a very sturdy boy.
(2) While we have always revealed his high prey instinct for CATS only (see below) --- people apply for him and when we make sure they understand he is what we call a "CAT KILLER" then they get upset and say they don't want that behavior in their dog. Well, he IS a dog and dogs are allowed to NOT like cats!
So, that is why we are providing this message. If YOU HATE CATS as much as Dodger does --- then please apply online.
Dodger's favorite thing to do is lay on the sofa and put his head on your knee. He just loves everyone and everyone loves him!
When people meet him, they are always surprised because he is not a small dog, but is strong, long, and low to the ground like a Bassett Hound. In general, he is very calm and has a very gentle nature, BUT he is NOT OK with cats. He has a strong prey drive and will chase them, barks at them, and sounds like he means them harm. So, NO kitties for Dodger.
UPDATE Dodger came to stay with us for a weekend playdate. I have two girls, ages 6 and 10, and he was really good with them. By the second morning he was wagging his tail when he saw them and giving them kisses. Once he realized they meant him no harm, he was very happy to be with them. He liked to follow me around the house and was most content when he was with everyone. He slept out of his crate all night only waking up occasionally to try and snuggle with me on the couch. He loves to carry things around in his mouth and likes to chew on toys and rawhides but didn't chew on anything he wasn't supposed to.
Dodger was a breeze to take care of and just a really sweet dog. He would make a wonderful family pet!
This is our neutered Basset/Boxer mix Dodger. Dodger might go to 50 pounds full grown. He is so sweet and funny. Like all Bassett's he is very long and low to the ground. He is a little character who would love to find that special family to love and adore him for the rest of his life. If you want to smile, just click on any of his pictures!! This is an adorable pup!! He just adores people and just LOVES puppies and other dogs.

Please Note:
We do not adopt our puppies to people who work full-time. Part-time is OK. We do not believe in leaving infants in crates all day.
