UPDATE: What a sweetie! She and Bouncer had a few romps in the yard and are now on my bed asleep. They definitely like each other. Bouncer offered her a toy. As you can see below, she's already started to settle in. She's explored the house, every room and I think she approves. As with all our kids, she loves the porch and looking out the windows. And my Aunt has scored big points, Sadie has had a taste of Breyer's vanilla. She definitely liked that. Though my Aunt was looking to find a lap dog, she has already fallen for Sadie and her sweet gentleness and her need to learn to be loved, not scared. She's going to be a wonderful addition to the family! And I promised my Aunt that if you come across another Nigel-type, or Bouncer- type small lap dog (12-15lb-ish) that doesn't nip at ankles, we'd seriously consider a third kid.
You get my greatest admiration for what you do - all the dogs are great. The mingle was fun. All of you must be exhausted at day's end. So glad to see that Devon also found a permanent home, too!
Gayle, Janice, Bouncer and Sadie!
9/18/07 Mercy, who is now Sadie, has gone home to live with her new brother Bouncer. It was love at first sight for him. He ran in the house and got his toy carrot and lovingly placed it in front of her as a love offering. What a gentleman! She will be loved and spoiled as she well deserves to be.
UPDATE: Well, what a difference a month in the life of a rescue dog can make.
See the pictures below to see how our dear little Mercy ended up in a shelter in VA. Everyone thought she had mange so she was scheduled to die. We saw her picture and said we would take her and I am so glad I did. She DID have a skin condtion but it is already cleared up after only a month. You can also see how much weight she has gained. Her backbone was showing before. She was really really depressed when she arrived since she lost her puppies so for the first two weeks she was miserable. Then magically one day her eyes looked shiny and she was smiling at me. She really smiles! Now she runs around and plays with her girlfriends and boyfriends and is getting to be the puppy she probably never had a chance to be. She is our current miracle baby!
This is our newest girl Mercy who is arriving from VA next week. They are all sad cases in my opinion but this one is really pitiful.
She has been slowly starving to death as you can see, she has severe mange, we don't know yet which one, sarcoptic or demodectic. She also has milk which means that when animal control captured her (thankfully they saved her life) without their knowledge her puppies were left to die. They could not have been in very good condition given her condition but this makes us all so horribly sad that in the year 2007 -- this is still happening on a daily basis across the country with these poor animals.
Mercy will need a lot of medical care and need to be quarantined for some time. The sarcoptic mange is highly contagious- the demodectic is not but it take MONTHS to cure it. So we will be seeking sponsorship to help us with her medical bills. If you help us --- we can help more of them.
Donations can also be made toward our "DE-SEX in the City"
Low Cost Spay/Neuter program. That is the only way we can
actually put a dent in tragedy by financing spay/neuter programs.

We also expect that if no one is home all day, arrangements will be made to provide the dog with at least (1) "potty break" daily. This can be through a family member, neighbor, or Petsitting service. We know that it is impossible for us humans to "hold it" for 8-10 hours, so we do not want our "shelter kids" to be expected to do so.
We have several Petsitting service companies that we can recommend:

We abide by the Humane Association's recommendation. For ANY DOG adoption to have a relatively good chance of success, we believe a child should be 8 years old & up. We only adopt what we call our "BONA-FIDE Kid Lovers to families with children." Many dogs do not want to live with children. You should only adopt a dog who LOVES kids to be sure you are able to make a lifetime commitment to a dog.
Any dog/pup adopted from us must have a fenced in property either Physical or Electric Fence. The fence must be installed before we will proceed with processing an adoption application. If you need a fence for your dog, but are not permitted to have a physical fence, or chose not to, please visit our friends at Pet Stop. Mention that you saw them at our website.
