UPDATE - 10-21-06 - Misty arrived in our lives back in April from our favorite shelter in WV - Wetzel. Rosy had driven from WV to South Jersey to put this little one in a safe home. It did not work out for the family so since we were so close they brought her here to us.

It is not our policy to accept dogs that are capable (even for good reason) of biting human beings.
Since Misty has been SEXUALLY & physically abused by men, she is not trustworthy.

She has fallen in love with our women volunteers one by one, but we still worry about her meeting men.

For that reason --- I have decided to adopt another "unadoptable" dog. She lives in my home, she sleeps in my bed under the covers, she wants to please me very much. Misty has complicated my life but I love her and she will spend the rest of her life with me.

UPDATE Sunday - 04-23-06 from Misty's Foster Mom:

Misty has only been here since Monday and already she is blossoming. She plays and jumps around with great glee when she sees me. She is a sweet, playful pup trying to engage me in fun and games. Misty loves to be where ever I am, following me from room to room, up and down the steps and when I sit at my computer she is below my desk. She curls up on my sofa to watch TV at night and just wants to cuddle.

She slept in my bed with her head on the pillow and just seems thrilled to be here with me. Her food aggression with dogs has improved already. She is eating with the rest of the dogs and even had her head in the same food bowl as Twinkles. I watch her like a hawk but she has done nothing to make me think she is accepting that there is plenty of food and she does not have to fight for it ever again.

She has met several volunteers already for the first time. She has a moment when she is guarded -- then all you have to do is tell her what a pretty girl she is --- and she really is -- and she is ready to meet new women.

I have not tried her with men and do not care to. She is fine with us and that is all that is important for now.

We did go to the Doggy Fest today so I had to have our petsitter come in to give everyone a potty break. She had not met Misty yet so I suggested she leave her crated and I would take care of her when I returned. Misty has to be handled carefully because of the severe abuse she has experienced. I want to be sure that I am present when she faces new situations. Well, I got a note from our petsitter saying that
Misty was wagging her tail and seemed pleased to see her so she did take her out of her crate and outside to potty and back in her crate. No problem!

I think this proves this pup can live a normal life with the right person if she is given the time to adjust.

I feel she will make a wonderful companion because this girl has so much love to give.

UPDATE: Misty has arrived here to L&F Dog Rescue. She is actually under my desk as I type this. Thanks to the 6 months of love and care Rosy from Wetzel County Pound in WV has given her, she now loves being with women. She was just upstairs running around the house like her tail was on fire! She was having FUN FUN FUN!! Please read her horrible story below and if you are moved by it and IF and ONLY IF you have ever worked with a severely abused animal, please contact us. We will need many hands to help this young pup become the sweet loving creature she was meant to be.

We have NO intention of placing her in a home where men or boys reside or even visit often. When you read her story below, you will understand why.

(Forwarded by a concerned person on Misty's behalf)

Misty, the sweet baby that she really is, has endured a life that no one, human nor any animal, should ever suffer. Misty was abused severely by her previous "owners" in West Virginia in many ways. As described by a neighbor, she was often left out on the porch without food or water, in the weather, (severe hot and bitter cold) and was beaten regularly with a metal pipe. She endured different types of abuse, including bestiality, which many people told about but none would step up to help her and get it stopped. Maybe because they felt it was not their place, or maybe because Misty was "just a dog". Misty never would have been saved if the owners did not end up being "taken away". For whatever reason, poor Misty has had so many obstacles to over come and had started doing a lot better with her shelter friends and her new doggy partners.

Although Misty has bonded with women, she is still so terrified of men that she cannot be near them without acting out. The County could not continue to hold her since a recent occurrence at the shelter. Although Misty has been through so much, she still had found love and taught love to the shelter workers, mostly Rosy, who loves her desperately and wants to do what she can to save her. Misty's abuse, through her first and only year of life has had a tremendous effect on her and it is so very sad that this has happened to such a beautiful, courageous, EXCEPTIONALLY INTELLIGENT girl. After being beaten, sexually abused, starved, and when found the house was full of human feces and garbage, and enduring God knows what else by two severe alcoholics, there has just been too much for this baby girl to over come. We cannot find anyone who is qualified/experienced and willing to work with this girl.

She did not deserve a life like this, as none do, but so many dogs are resilient and even though Misty hasn't fully recovered from the abuse, she has come out of it to an extent with her shelter friends at Wetzel County Animal Shelter. I applaud and commend them for all they have done to work with her and all the help they tried to find for her as they are an exceptional team and genuinely care about the furkids that are in their care.

The Wetzel County Animal Shelter is a "county pound" in WV which must take every stray and unwanted dog in the County. They have held Misty for 6 months, trying to find the time to work her into the busy schedule/socialize her/ and teach her to trust.

When they couldn't find one, they reluctantly scheduled her for euthanasia, but the dog warden missed her vein 6 times so Rosy pulled her off the table and carried her back to her box. (she was sedated) The dog warden is very experienced and this was very odd, so it was clearly not meant to happen. Misty has a strong soul and someone is watching out for her!!!

WE ARE LOOKING FOR SOMEONE QUALIFIED, TRAINED, AND EXPERIENCED TO SOCIALIZE AND TRAIN MISTY TO BECOME A "DOG" . IF YOU ARE A QUALIFED PET LOVER PLEASE CONTACT US ASAP AND FILL OUT OUR ONLINE ADOPTION APPLICATION.
