Today I found The Murph Man's new Mom.
He will be moving to INDIANAPOLIS to start his new life but I have no doubt the trip, which is only 2 hours by plane, will be worth it to him. His new Mommy happens to be a detective so of course she needed to read about his "crimes" and like us, she was amazed
that any real animal lover would consider what Murphy did as anything other then being an unsupervised young pup. Now, whose fault was that? So, all is well for Murphy and he will get to live with his new parents who are both police officers so he better be a good boy!

UPDATE on Murphy: This cute boy lives here with my family and he is just delightful. He just LOVES to be outside in the backyard enjoying the sights and sounds. He likes to play tag for about 1/2 hour with his foster sisters --- then he is a happy, calm, content puppy boy. You can't tell in the picture but his coloring is actually cream and a wonderful apricot. He is so very delicious! And yes, we realize he needs a haircut.

He is gentle, sweet, very affectionate and is so very charming. The Murph Man has had a rough start. No one has come along yet who cares to take the time to give him all the love and attention he craves. We're not worried though because we know that special someone will come along to love our Murph for the rest of his life as he deserves.

Now that he is getting the daily exercise and attention that he so badly needed he has already calmed down. He just needed friends --- so we would definitely want to place Murphy with another dog as a playmate. It is mandatory for his peace of mind and happiness that he have a fenced in yard that he can run, play, watch birds in like any young pup would want and need.

UPDATE on the Murphy. Please read carefully. We want to alert potential adopters to the fact the Murphy was just
returned to this rescue. We knew, and the family was told. that a dog of his size and breed (60 pounds and terrier mix) and energy level needed to be able to expend some of his energy daily by just running around and amusing himself out in the backyard. He loves to just sit outside and take in the view. He loves, just LOVES other dogs and playing with them in a rough housing manner. The family that we adopted him to promised to have a fence installed. We told them a fence was mandatory.
(1) They did not ever have a fence installed.

We knew that Murphy had never been an indoor dog. He had never been a part of a family. Yet, he was housebroken almost immediately and he is very smart!
He did not know any basic commands or has ever been taught any manners. No one ever loved Murphy, he was a stray in Georgetown DE and had never been treated him like a beloved pet. Luckily for him, he is such a happy boy, he doesn't hold it against anyone that he has never been loved. He is always hopeful that someone will come along who will enjoy his company and his personality.

Again, we told this family that obedience training was mandatory.
We told the family he would need to go to obedience school or have a personal trainer to come and "train the family on how to train" Murphy. That is what dog training is about, training us humans on how to train them to understand their role in our lives.
(2) They did not take him to obedience classes

We tell all adopters that new "shelter kids" need to be crate trained. We train them to be crate trained when we foster them. Our motto is: "Don't trust them ... until you can!" This is to help them adjust and to NOT get in trouble with chewing or housebreaking incidents.

We certainly do not expect them being crated for 8-10 hours a day ... we do expect our adopters to be prepared to have a family member, petsitter, or come home for lunch to give them a potty break, but crate training is necessary while a dog adjusts to it's new life and new family.
(3) They did not crate Murphy because they said they felt "bad" for him when he was in the crate.

Well, listed below is the e-mail that we received from his former family saying they no longer wanted him. I'm showing this so everyone can see
"Murphy's crimes" and why he was returned to us. His real crimes were
that of being a very young dog. Murphy is NO saint, he is a young dog who has needs and training being one of the most important.

All those needs were revealed to this family. They did not follow through with anything and then were surprised that he got in trouble.

This is why Murphy's next family will have to be extremely experienced and an installed fence in mandatory. Since he is a terrier breed we feel he should not live with cats. He doesn't seem to want to hurt them but he sure thinks they are real interesting and most cats don't enjoy being that interesting to a dog!

Subject: Murphy's crimes ...

Good Morning Marleen,

I'm headed to Dover for meetings for the rest of the day but I wanted to get in touch with you regarding Murphy.

We love him very much and it is with a very heavy and sad heart that we must give him up to you. In the past two weeks, there has been utter chaos in the household. Murphy has chewed 1 cell phone, two cordless phones, pulled the kids lounge furniture to shreds. He is fine for the most part when he is one on one. We gave him little spurts of freedom around the house when everyone is home or even a few of us. Last week he was "bounding about and disconnected the sump pumps" in the basement and when the heavy rains came we flooded. That in itself cost $600.00 for a visit from Service Pro.

We have had a family meeting and the costs are just adding up and adding up. I talked to a good friend of mine who is in the pet care business and she felt strongly that Murphy belongs on a farm or in a home where he is looked after 24 hours a day. He needs constant attention.

Last night was the final straw. I had a meat loaf prepared and on the table and ran outside to the mailbox. When I walked in, he was ON the table eating our dinner! I was afraid the table would collapse. It is causing our household to be walking on eggshells.

I would appreciate you contacting me after 4:30 p.m. tonight. I have to go home right after work and get an early dinner started. I will gladly surrender Murphy to you tomorrow after work. I do not want any money back and I will donate his cage and other items. Sadly, this was a big undertaking and one that has set us back a month's salary.

Thanks for understanding and I wish him only a good home with proper care and constant attention.

Talk to you all soon,
XXXXXXXXXXXXX

This is Murphy, he is about a year old and, according to the vet, is a soft coated Wheaton terrier, possibly mixed with a bit of sheepdog, but he is basically a terrier. He said he looks like a Wheaton terrier on steroids and is about 60 pounds. I've got to tell you, I don't know that I have ever seen a dog quite this cute (just don't tell my own babies)!

We found this cutie at the SPCA in Georgetown, DE. He had been captured by animal control. He was not neutered at the time, he is now, and he was out looking for some companionship. That could have cost him his life if they had not caught him.

Murphy will only be adopted to a family that has experience with the terrier breeds and who also has some level of experience with dog training or is willing to hire a dog trainer. Murphy is a high-energy young boy who needs a family that can truly understand what a special boy is he. He loves and needs human and animal companionship. He also MUST have a fenced in yard where he can run to his heart's content (and wear himself out, of course). We know he is quite smart. He learned SIT quickly. And he has been somewhat successful with STAY and WAIT.

He loves riding in the car. He has been neutered, housebroken, up to date with all his vaccines, micro-chipped, crate trained and groomed. As you can see, he is quite handsome and the kind of dog that people will stop you in the street to admire him. He is adorable!
