This is Benji. He is a sweet gentle soul, but his soul (and his body) has been very beat down in his 3 years on this earth. He is only 25 pounds and of course we all wonder how anyone could harm an animal but especially a tiny boy like him. Benji looks old but is actually a young adult. He has obviously had a very hard life prior to being literally "thrown away" by the side of the road. He has old trauma to the right side of his face as his eye looks sunken and he has some broken teeth. He had flea dermatitis and matted hair but Rosy at the shelter took care of all that for him. After he arrived with us our vets found that he had a heart problem and needed extensive tests. We found a wonderful new Mommy for him who is going to make sure that he has the best future! But..........

Due to his extensive medical needs while with us, we have a bill for $660 and we are asking for your help. If anyone would like to contribute to our Benji medical fund, please use the form below. We appreciate everyone that cares about our "shelter" kids.

Hi everyone! It's me, Benji. Mommy is so sorry that she has not updated everyone sooner about my progress but it's been a very busy week for us!

Yesterday I had two appointments at Mommy's hospital - one with Dr. Miller and one with Dr. Bowersox. Dr. Miller is a cardiologist and he checked out my heart - and guess what? He says my heart is absolutely healthy!! That means I am a perfect candidate for surgery. As for my eye, Dr. Bowersox, an opthamologist, told Mommy that even though my eye make look bad, it does not hurt me at all except when it becomes dry. So now Mommy puts medicine in my eye twice a day to help my eyes produce tears. I am such a good boy and I sit very still when she does it (but that's only because I know she will give me a treat). The good news is, Dr. Bowersox doesn't think my eye will need to be removed. I go back to see him in a month to make sure that the medicine is doing what it is supposed to.

Also, while I was at the hospital yesterday with Mommy, one of the emergency doctors that she works with, Dr. Gaughan, gave me a shot to prevent me from getting sick. It's supposed to prevent me from getting diseases like parvo or distemper. It kind of stung but Mommy held me really tight and kissed me on the head and when it was all over, Dr. Gaughan gave me lots of doggy cookies.

Next week I have another appointment at Mommy's hospital only this time it's with Dr. Orsini who is a dentist. He is going to look at my broken teeth and discuss surgery with Mommy. Hopefully that surgery will take place soon after.

As for the rest of my life, I love my new home and my new sister, Sadie. At first I was a little nervous, but I have definitely gotten used to living in a home where I am very loved. I have been walking with Sadie and Mommy every morning when we get up. I love sniffing around and trying to keep up with my sister. I have even started to "poopy" on the morning walk which makes Mommy very happy. I saw that Sadie was doing it so I figured I should too.

I've also graduated from sleeping in the crate to sleeping on Mommy's bed with Sadie at bedtime. We all have our own spots on the bed. I like to sleep on my back with my legs in the air because I feel so safe.

Well I guess that's just about it! I will keep you updated after I see the dentist next week. Otherwise, I am so happy and feel so much better. (I think I'm starting to look a little handsome too.) Tell Winston, Chloe, and everyone else that I said hi!

Barks, nips & kisses,
Benji

PLEASE NOTE: We will only be able to adopt him to a family who has had experience with helping a dog who has been abused in the past.

For his sake, we will not place him in a family with small children as we feel he needs to be the center of someone's life. He needs love and healing for his little soul and body.

There will be additional medical bills due to his old injuries. We feel that at the very least, we may have to have a few of his broken teeth removed. We will provide invoices to show what the costs are when we have him checked by our vet upon arrival.

If you would like to fill out an application, you must first register on the website and await an e-mailed passcode. Once you have this info, you will be able to access our application.

All L&F dogs/pups are crate & potty trained, temperament tested, have been chosen for sweet & gentle dispositions, have lived in foster homes with families, and have had the following:

SPAYED/NEUTERED

Microchipping

Tested for Heartworm, Lyme, Ehrlichia

On HeartGuard & Frontline Plus

Rabies, Distemper, Parvo vaccines.

Intra Trac ll Kennel Cough

Two De-Worming

PLEASE NOTE: We do not place puppies in homes where they will be left alone all day. Part-time is ok. Puppies, like babies, need lots of attention, socialization and cuddles. We do not feel that it is humane to leave them in a crate for 8-10 hours at a time. .

If you are applying for an adult dog, we do expect that if no one is home all day, arrangements will be made to provide the dog with at least (1) "potty break" daily, whether it is through a family member, neighbor or petsitting service. We know that it is impossible for us humans to "hold it" for 8-10 hours, so we do not want our "shelter kids" to be expected to do so.
